PMG makes the map-search experience easy by providing familiar icons to guide users' efforts. From the two zoom icons to the print button, a user will feel at ease with these everyday images. However, some icons are less familiar to users and can thus confuse them. Let's take a closer look at the ten provided icons to familiarize ourselves with those in place for this STIP Manager application.
-
-- Full extent: Zooms the map to the state boundary
-- Zoom in: Enlarges the map; if a location is selected, it centers that point on the map
-
-- Zoom out: Reduces the map size; if a location is selected, it centers that point on the map
-
-- Zoom area: Changes the map zoom to a user defined area
-
-- Zoom to query results: Zooms the map to the results of the currently defined query
-
-- Change map display: Opens an interface (box) which allows a user to specify the projects displayed based on certain filters
-
-- Identify feature: Allows the user to select any GIS feature and retrieve information
-
-- Identify route: Allows the user to select any route and retrieve information
-
-- Basemaps: Opens a list of available basemaps for the user; affects map appearance
-
-- Print map: Opens a print dialogue for users to print the map
Each icon listed is designed to work directly with the map, giving users a spatial experience with project data in the STIP. Users can reference this list as a reminder for the functionality of the icons, but they can also simply hover their mouse over the unknown icon to display its given name.
